Injections to Relax Forehead Lines and Other Wrinkles for Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, and the San Francisco Bay Area

You’ve likely heard of BOTOX® Cosmetic, but the popular prescription is worth explaining in detail here. BOTOX® (botulinum toxin A) is an FDA-approved injectable medication used to soften wrinkles in the face. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles and is especially effective in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. By offering BOTOX® at his San Francisco Bay Area practice, Dr. Stanley Jacobs meets the needs of patients who want to make a cosmetic change to their face, but who are not yet ready to choose surgery.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular treatment, enjoyed by millions of people worldwide each year. We hear of interest in it from all around the San Francisco Bay Area, from Napa to Oakland to Santa Rosa. Find out why this simple procedure is a go-to choice for people looking to reduce the appearance of lines on their face.

Patients around the United States who want to address their facial wrinkles overwhelmingly choose BOTOX®. San Francisco Bay Area residents are no exception, given how often they seek out facial plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Jacobs for the procedure. Since BOTOX® Cosmetic excels at keeping muscles from contracting, it can be used to temporarily prevent the appearance of wrinkles from the forehead (where the corrugator supercilli and procerus push the skin into furrows) to the sides of the eyes (home of the crow’s feet-forming orbicularis oculi).*

BOTOX® can also bring temporary relief to patients unhappy with their neck bands by targeting the platysma muscles, smoothing a dimpled chin by calming overactive mentalis muscles, reducing a gummy smile by relaxing the levatorlabiisuperiorisalaequenasi, and more. Talk to Dr. Jacobs and his team to learn about the many aesthetic issues that a few simple injections can solve for months at a time. As an experienced facial surgeon, he can target the exact muscles with precision for maximum cosmetic benefit while maintaining a patient’s health and safety. Is Botox Cosmetic Right for Me?

This cosmetic is intended for patients ages 18 to 65 who have frown lines that can range from moderate to severe. These lines form when we wrinkle or furrow our brow. Want a better idea of what we’re talking about? Make a concerned expression in the mirror and take a look at your face, particularly where grooves show above and between your eyebrows.

This part of the face is just one area where deep grooves can form after years of repeated creasing—and those lines can remain visible for a while, even after the muscles you use to make such expressions are at rest. Gentle use of BOTOX® by the practitioners at The Jacobs Center for Cosmetic Surgery allows for subtle, natural rejuvenation without the patient ultimately looking “done” or “frozen.”

BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved by the FDA to address frown lines and crow’s feet, but it is frequently used by trained, experienced, and certified professionals on other areas of the face as well. Since it prevents muscle contractions that reveal wrinkles, it’s an ideal cosmetic to smooth out forehead lines, bunny lines that appear on the upper sides of the nose, and lip lines that radiate out from the mouth.

The effect BOTOX® has on muscles means it can also be used to even out a dimpled chin and reduce the appearance of neck bands. BOTOX® can even provide a temporary “lift” that brings up downturned corners of the mouth and eyebrows by relaxing the muscles that pull them down.

It accomplishes all of this by safely blocking chemical signals sent from the brain, and the effects can last for months. Patients who like their refreshed, invigorated look often return to get maintenance treatments. To learn more about the many uses of BOTOX® Cosmetic and how the injectable can rejuvenate your face, contact The Jacobs Center for a complimentary consultation at (707) 473-0220 for the Healdsburg office and (415) 433-0303 for the San Francisco office.*

Each treatment area typically requires one syringe (or 25 units) of BOTOX®, however doses are customized depending on each patient’s needs. Part of the appeal of BOTOX® is the fact that it can be administered quickly—literally within minutes—and comes with virtually no recovery or down time. Patients can walk in and walk out a short time later with a fresh, more youthful look.

Once BOTOX® has been injected, communication via the nerves in the treatment area is effectively shut down. This prevents the muscle contractions that cause the unwanted lines and wrinkles. The prescription drug’s smoothing effects can last up to four months, after which the treatment can be repeated. You can choose to stop getting BOTOX® injections at any time, but know that your forehead’s appearance will eventually go back to the way it was before you began with the treatments.

In addition, advanced uses of BOTOX® at The Jacobs Center for Cosmetic Surgery can treat areas such as bunny lines on the nose, vertical lines in the central lip, downturned corners of the mouth, chin creases, and even platysmal neck bands.

What causes the wrinkles Botox Cosmetic treats?

Patients often wonder why BOTOX® works to reduce the appearance of certain facial lines, but not others.

There are two main types of wrinkles that form: dynamic and static. BOTOX® Cosmetic addresses dynamic wrinkles, which develop as muscles repeatedly pull the skin into furrows. This daily activity, coupled with a gradual loss of collagen, elastin, and other components that keep skin moist and pliable, etches lines that eventually remain visible even when the skin is at rest. If the muscles do not contract, the skin stays smooth.

Static wrinkles also develop as the skin loses collagen and other elements, but these lines form without help from muscle movement. Loss of volume and moisture leads to drying and laxity, creating everything from fine lines to significant creases, and even sunken hollows.

Since BOTOX® Cosmetic acts on muscles, it does not smooth out static wrinkles, though there are other options, including resurfacing treatments and injectable fillers, that do. Dr. Stanley Jacobs and his team can help each patient to make the best choice for his or her unique needs and goals.

Is Botox Cosmetic Safe?

Yes. Dr. Jacobs is committed to safety at his practice, whether patients are undergoing significant facial cosmetic surgery or receiving BOTOX® injections in a single, 15-minute treatment session.

As an injectable, BOTOX® has been the subject of numerous trials and studies that have proven its efficacy and safety time and again. Also, as noted above, there are millions of applications each year to satisfied patients who suffer no ill effects and enjoy months of smoother skin and a rejuvenated appearance. The science-based FDA approval backed by years of real-world use indicates that BOTOX® is a very safe cosmetic, particularly when administered by an experienced medical professional.

Patients considering the treatment should remember that, while it is safe, their ongoing health and ideal results depend greatly on their choice of provider. Anyone offering BOTOX® should be licensed and trained in the specific product’s use, as there are several botulinum toxin-based injectables on the market, and they are not all the same. Only BOTOX® is made by Allergan, which controls production and maintains its own rigorous manufacturing standards, as well as oversees training requirements.

Dr. Jacobs designed his offices to maximize patient comfort, and he holds himself and his team to rigorous standards of education, cleanliness and hygiene, and care. He also encourages patients to ask questions and get answers until they feel completely satisfied with the decision for their treatment of choice.

Patients may notice some itching, discomfort, redness, bruising or swelling centered on the injection site in the hours or days after their treatment session. These are not unusual and should clear up on their own with help from nothing more than time. Less common is a mild headache or eyelid drooping, both of which are also temporary.

Choosing a trained and experienced provider is the best way to minimize the risk of side effects. These and more will be discussed at the consultation, during which patients should also note any and all medications being taken, as well as herbal supplements, vitamins, and similar products. It is particularly important to share the date of any botulinum toxin treatments, no matter the brand, from the past four months, and to mention any allergies.

It is worth noting that prior to its use as a cosmetic, BOTOX® was used for years in a medical setting and continues to be administered to treat a range of physical problems, from chronic migraines to overactive bladders to persistent spasms. It is also frequently used to temporarily stop hyperhidrosis, which is an excessive amount of sweating from the armpits. The injectable’s communication-blocking abilities make it ideal for patients whose problems are related to lack of control in a specific area, as a localized injection can prevent the targeted muscle or muscles from contracting on their own. Decades of highly scrutinized medical applications have further honed doctors’ understanding of the active ingredient and helped them to understand its properties, as well as the best ways to inject it while ensuring patients’ safety, whether in a clinical or cosmetic setting.

What does Botox Cosmetic cost?

BOTOX® from an experienced provider is now available at its most affordable cost in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Marin and Sonoma counties, at both our Union Square and Healdsburg locations. The number of units needed for each patient will be estimated during the consultation, when an in-person assessment of the face can be made.

Patients who plan to continue BOTOX® Cosmetic injections for maintenance into the future, or who want to enjoy the benefits of other Allergan products, can join the Brilliant Distinctions® program, which offers points that can be applied for savings on future treatments.

A Botox Cosmetic Snapshot

Purpose

BOTOX® is intended to soften wrinkles, especially in the forehead and around the eyes, by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause them.

Treatment

After a consultation by our experts, customizing treatment to your problem areas, injections take only 10 to 15 minutes using ultrafine needles to provide the least discomfort.

Recovery

Bruising and swelling are very rare, so most patients can return to work or activities immediately after treatment. Patients are asked to abstain from strenuous physical activity for 24 hours.

Results

After five to seven days, patients will see a weakening in the muscles that cause wrinkles that lasts three to five months. Wrinkles when the face is at rest gradually soften over that time as the skin turns over. Treatments that accelerate skin turnover can help hasten this process for the most stubborn of lines and wrinkles.

More options beyond Botox Cosmetic

Since a BOTOX® injection targets a specific region of the face, dermal fillers and/or skin resurfacing with peels and facials are often used carefully in conjunction with it to achieve the best, most subtle rejuvenating results. While BOTOX® can smooth out problem areas around the eyes and elsewhere, it doesn’t rejuvenate or refresh the skin itself. A chemical peel can reduce the appearance of blemishes on the newly wrinkle-free skin.

Patients looking for a more involved solution than BOTOX® may want to consider a forehead lift. Surgical results are much longer lasting than the temporary effects of injectables, as they basically take elements of the face back to the way they looked years prior.

Dr. Jacobs’ goal for each patient is to create a natural and harmonious look so that no one feature stands out as noticeably treated or obviously different from the rest of the face. Surgical and nonsurgical solutions can be combined in a variety of ways to suit each particular face, making your cosmetic journey as unique as you are.
